As most of you know, I do home health physical therapy. I get to meet many people and hear many stories throughout my day. I heard a great story today that I thought I must share....no names will be shared to protect privacy...just the awesome story.
As I was treating my patient today, his wife was telling me how much my patient's (her husband) family didn't like her. When I asked why, she told me it was because of the way they got married. I asked her to tell me the story.
She told me that her parents were abusive even after she graduated high school. She worked in a diner in a small town in rural Alabama. One day, after she had been hit the night before, he and one of her friends came in, and they chatted for a while. The very next day, he came back to the diner and asked her to go to Florida with him. She said the only way she would go to Florida was if she had a piece of paper saying they were married.....so he said, "Let's get married." The very next day they went to the court house to get married. (Remember that this was just 2 days after they met!)
It was at this point during the story in which he looked up at me and said, "And I didn't even know her last name!" (That line sounds like it would make a great song!)
She continued the story by saying the person at the courthouse asked him, "What is your bride's last name?" He turned to his soon to be bride and said,"By the way, what is your last name?"
She explained that they got married to get her out of her parents house. She said they made a deal they would stay together for 3 months to get her established in the world, then they would get a divorce. That was 43 years ago...and they are still together!
I love this story for 2 reasons. The first is just the pure romance of it! The last is a silly reason, but thanks to Carrie Underwood, it makes me laugh....he didn't even know her last name!
